My writing has really been influenced by my English professors at UC Davis. I have access to these communities because I came to UC Davis, and I have really tried to make the most of my experience here by making sure that I get to class on time, by going to office hours, and reading all of the assigned course readings. I feel really lucky to have had the opportunity to interact with my professors–they are so helpful, and as I’ve progressed through the major, I’ve been able to take classes that are really interesting to me. I love to take critical theory courses, as well as poetry classes–and I find that when I go to office hours and share my interests with my professors, they really provide me with so much information and give so many reading recommendations that they feel would help me gain more information about my interests.
To refer back to my mention of taking critical theory classes and how it has influenced my literacy– I took critical theory both here at UC Davis as well as at UCLA, and I immediately fell in love. The critical theory class that I took at UC Davis was amazing– my professor’s assigned readings included work by Derrida, Marx, Lacan, Freud, etc… and I was so excited that I began to read everything that I could get my hands on! So in my free time I try to make my way through the theorists I mentioned above, as well as Althusser, Deleuze and Guattari, some Spinoza, Foucault, and Adorno.
I feel very privileged to be able to attend to UC Davis in that I am able to take all of these informative and interesting classes with instructors that I really respect–I am aware that this is not something that everybody is able to do. To clarify, I am really lucky that my family was supportive in my decision to attend college.
